The Herrings were an established family of equestrian artists, and Fred continued this tradition by painting his everyday scenes of farmyard life, of racehorses, and of hunting parties.

The Artist
John Frederick Herring Jnr. was a highly regarded sporting and animal painter. He was born in Doncaster, the eldest son of John Frederick Herring Snr. John F Jnr exhibited widely in London, primarily between 1860 and 1873 when he had 53 works shown at the Royal Society of British Artists, 10 at the British Institution, and 15 at the Royal Academy.

A highly popular artist during his lifetime, John Frederick Herring Jnr's work is still widely sought after.
